Welcome to Alpena Township!

Alpena Township is located in the northeastern lower peninsula and has frontage on Lake Huron, Long Lake, the Thunder Bay River and other water sources. Our township encompasses the City of Alpena and contains 125 square miles of land. Our current population, based on the 2000 Census, is 9,788 with the entire county totaling 31,314 residents.

Electrical Permits to be issued through the Township beginning January 30, 2012. Please note that the Township of Alpena will be allowed to enforce the State Electrical Code and issue electrical permits beginning Monday, January 30th. Current electrical permits issued by the state of Michigan will continue to be inspected by the state electrical inspector. Electrical permits and commercial plan review applications are available at the township in the building department or HERE. Frank Rosinski will be doing township electrical inspections and plan reviews and may be contacted at (989) 356-2908.

Please Be Aware! Phragmites is a large grass that invades shorelines and wetlands and can grow more than 15 feet tall. Alpena Township Nature Preserve! Come and enjoy access to pristine natural resources along our quiet coast on Lake Huron. The Nature Preserve is located on Misery Bay containing 133 acres of land with 9,632 feet along the Lake Huron shoreline. The Nature Preserve is open to the public and contains trails leading you to marshes, fens, cobble beaches and underwater sink holes!
